Kuuipo Boat Captain Ray Dela Cruz and his anglers, Joe Guerrero and Joe Reyes, were commended for capturing the first place spot (yellowfin category) during the recently held the 20th Annual Saipan International Fishing Tournament.

The 20th Annual Saipan International Fishing Tournament finally kicked off on Sept. 11, 2004, at Saipan Smiling Cove Marina after being postponed due to Supertyphoon Chaba’s devastating effect on the CNMI.

Some 94 boats from Palau, Guam, Rota, Tinian and Saipan participated in the challenge to catch the winning prize in each category before the time deadline on Sunday, Sept. 12.

Danny Agulto’s record in the Bill Fish category, set in 1997 at 624.43 lbs, and James Taitano’s record in the Yellowfin category in 1990 at 106 lbs remained the standing records to break.

This year, Guam Charlie Cat Boat Captain Dr. Hoa Van Nguyen and anglers, Jesus Curo and Quane Ly, caught a monster marlin at 519.40 lbs.

Grand V caught the biggest/heaviest yellowfin at 55.07 lbs, earning for Dela Cruz, Guerrero and Reyes the Duty Free Cup and $2,500 cash.

“The members of the [8th Saipan and Northern Islands Municipal Council] and the people of the CNMI join John M. San Nicolas, president, and Saipan Fishing Association members in extending special recognition, congratulation and commendation to Dela Cruz, Guerrero and Reyes for [their accomplishment] and wish them the best as they prepare for the 21st Annual Saipan International Fishing Tournament,” part of the resolution reads

It was certified by chair Gregorio V. Deleon Guerrero and vice chair David A. Indalecio and attested by secretary Antonia M. Tudela.
