Local student earns Who’s Who honor
More and more students from the Commonwealth are being recognized nationally for their pursuit of academic excellence.
The latest to earn her way into the prestigious list is 17-year-old Jonita DLG Fejeran, who was recently nominated to have her academic biography appear in the Who’s Who Among American High School Students 2003/2004 Edition.
Fejeran, currently a freshman at the Northern Marianas College, received the nod courtesy of her academic performances as a senior at Saipan Southern High School.
With her nomination, she enters a class that makes up less than 5 percent of nationwide students who qualify for one of 127 scholarships totaling $202,000. So far, over $3.6 million in scholarships have been awarded through the program.
National Academic Affairs chair Parke H. Davis recently wrote a congratulatory letter to Fejeran, informing her of her accomplishment.
In the letter, Davis commended Fejeran for being considered for the honor. Students can only be nominated through a guidance counselor, making the endorsement memorable.
The letter also indicated that Fejeran’s achievements will be made known nationwide as the publication will be distributed to approximately 11,000 colleges, high schools, libraries, and youth organizations.
Fejeran is also eligible to use the College Referral Service, which informs selected colleges and universities of their achievements.
“Recent surveys indicate that 95 percent of responding college admission directors use the CRS to recruit students for admission,” Davis said. “Each year, over 100,000 referrals are made for Who’s Who students.”
Fejeran is the daughter of Joseph and Juanet Fejeran.
Who’s Who was established in 1967. The next year, it was decided that students be assisted financially, resulting in the establishment of the Educational Communications Scholarship Foundation, a non-profit organization funded by the publishers of Who’s Who.
In its first year, the foundation awarded $400 each to 10 students. Last year, about $200,000 in scholarships were awarded exclusively to students in Who’s Who.
