U.S. District Court for the NMI Chief Judge Ramona V. Manglona yesterday slapped a one-month jail term against one of the five defendants in the driver’s license scam case.

Manglona gave defendant Hongmei Sun credit for the one day that she already served in jail.

After serving the remaining 29 days in jail, the 40-year-old Sun will be placed on supervised release. She was also required to pay a $100 court assessment fee and perform 100 hours of community work service.

Manglona said imposing a jail sentence on Sun is appropriate to promote respect of the law and deter others as well from committing the same crime.

The judge noted that Sun admitted for her involvement in dealing with eight individuals for them to obtain a driver’s license unlawfully.

Manglona said with the defendant’s actions, she was putting harm or potential harm to the community.

“The potential harm to the community is very real,” said.

Manglona said although she sympathizes with Sun’s financial condition, harsh condition is not an excuse to commit a crime.
