PacifiCare Asia Pacific, Bristol-Myers Squibb (Guam), MedPharm, and the Pacific Daily News recently donated substantial educational grants to support the 1st Micronesian Medical Symposium scheduled for October 8-10 at the Guam Marriott Resort.

The symposium is hosted by the Guam Memorial Hospital with the Guam Medical Society as corporate sponsor.

PacifiCare Asia Pacific is the symposium’s Gold Grantor through a contribution of $7,000 to underwrite the medical education program.

The Silver Grantors, with $5,000 contributions each, are Bristol-Myers Squibb (Guam), and MedPharm. The Pacific Daily News is also a Silver Grantor through in-kind contributions.

The three-day symposium is intended for physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to:

• provide medical education and training;

• foster shared healthcare dialogue; and

• promote professional and regional healthcare alliances.

Attendees to the conference will receive education and training on a wide variety of medical and healthcare topics including medical responses to: bio-terrorism; conflict resolution in healthcare; prevention and treatment of depression, suicide, diabetes, pediatric toxicology, and vascular disease; and up-to-date information on pain management and hormone replacement therapy for women.

Special presentations will provide insights on the history and progress of regional nursing in Micronesia, medicine and surgery in a war zone, and new approaches to tobacco control.

The three day symposium also offers up to 20 Continuing Medical Education credits for physicians and nurses.

A single registration fee covers all meals (Friday dinner, breakfast and lunches on Saturday and Sunday), refreshments, all conference reference materials, and all CME credits.

All members of the Guam Medical Society, Guam Nurses Association, and military personnel registering before Oct. 7 can do so for a reduced registration fee of $75. Registration on-site for members is $100. General admission prior to Oct. 7 is $150, or $200 onsite.

While the conference materials are targeted for the medical community and may be technical in nature, interested members of the public are invited to register. Contact 647-2350, 647-2213, 647-2555 or 649-8228 for further information.
