Open letter to Gov. Babauta
My parents and family are originally from Saipan. I have served in the Armed Forces and have retired. As one of the veterans from the CNMI, I wanted to visit the Office of Veterans Affairs here. I was shocked, dismayed, and upset at the manner in which that office is managed.
On several occasions, I called the office to make an appointment with Director Vianne Hocog. Since my plan is to relocate to Saipan, I want to be informed of available benefits and services to the veterans in the CNMI including “tri-care” program. But to no avail, I could not get a hold of him (Director Hocog) nor make any appointment.
I then decided to visit his office and waited for him there. After waiting for sometime, I asked the clerk whether Mr. Hocog would be working that day. Her response was that she wasn’t sure because he seldom comes in to work and if he does, he will spend only a few minutes then take off. She also mentioned that Mrs. Coleman handles issues pertaining to veterans benefits and that he (Director Hocog) will take care of political issues only.
I could not believe what I was hearing from that office. It gives me an indication that Mr. Hocog is evading his responsibility and his clients—the veterans in the CNMI. I am amazed at your administration condoning this type of action and pitiable services.
Governor, I strongly recommend that you monitor that office closely. I am relocating from Monterey, California to Saipan and if no action is taken on this matter, I am obliged to write to the Secretary of Veterans Administration to file a formal complaint.
