Another local student was recently recognized for his academic achievements and his continued efforts to achieve academic excellence.

Mount Carmel School student Jeffrey Pinaula Sanchez was selected for membership in The National Society of High School scholars—an invitation given only to students who have superior academic achievement and are among the top scholars in the nation.

With his selection, the Mount Carmel high school standout, son of Joe and Bernie Sanchez, is eligible for various scholarships offered only to members of the Society.

Other valuable benefits include opportunities for networking, events, publications, among others.

His induction was announced by NSHSS Honorary Chair Claes Nobel, a senior member of the Nobel Prize family.

“I congratulate Jeffrey on this outstanding achievement and applaud his commitment to academic excellence,” Nobel said. “The hard work and success of these exceptional young people will ensure a future generation dedicated to their communities and world betterment.”

Sanchez is now eligible to compete for the Claes Nobel Academic Scholarships—four $5,000 scholarships to be awarded annually. In addition, he may also compete for the National Scholar Awards—$1,000 awards given to selected finalists for the Claes Nobel Academic Scholarships; the Robert P. Sheppard Leadership Award—$1,000 award for an NSHSS member demonstrating outstanding commitment to community service and initiative in volunteer activities; Academic Paper Awards—scholarships for $250; Presidential Classroom benefits—a $100 discount on programs as well as a chance at scholarships offered exclusively to NSHSS members; as well as a tuition scholarship for a Presidential Classroom program valued at $1,200 and another valued at $750, among others.

Along with Nobel, other members of The National Society of High School scholars Board of Advisors include actress Tyra Banks, Olympic medallist Jackie Joyner-Kersee, poet Maya Angelou, U.S. Sen. John McCain, Universal Pictures chair Stacey Snider, actor and producer Kevin Spacey, and International AIDS Trust president Sandra Thurman, among others.
