The Historic Preservation Office, under the auspices of the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs, anticipates the receipt of approximately $385,834 from the U.S. National Park Service for fiscal year 2004. This funding is provided to support the Commonwealth’s Historic Preservation Program.

Prior to finalizing the grant package, the HPO would like to solicit the community’s input or comments on what priorities and activities it should further undertake to enhance or strengthen its program. The following are examples of work goals that are proposed for FY 2004 and FY 2005 under this two-year grant cycle:

* Conducting necessary surveys in advance of construction projects;

* Conducting surveys of the Northern Islands;

* Implementing and maintaining its Geographic Information System;

* Nominating significant sites to the National Register of Historic Places;

* Maintaining significant cultural and historical sites;

* Publishing the results of CNMI archaeology and historical data through the division’s publication series;

* Educating the CNMI’s children through school visits, lectures, and fieldtrips; and

* Providing professional staff development training or technical assistance to the public

Interested individuals are invited to provide their comments to the HPO in writing. Written comments should be addressed to the Division of Historic Preservation, Department of Community & Cultural Affairs, P.O. Box 500090 CK, Saipan, MP, 96950.
