The Sporting Complex in Oleai welcomed back the 2004 Men’s Island Wide Fast Pitch Softball League this past Tuesday and Thursday, but it appeared that only half of the teams in the blue darter division were ready to get back in the swing of things, as all of the games were ended via the 10-run mercy rule

On Tuesday, Sept. 14, the action finished almost as soon as it started, as Verizon made quick work of the Islanders, 15-5 in five innings. There were no standouts on Verizon; instead there was a solid effort put forth by a solid team.

The legends of long distance combined for just seven hits, but managed to take advantage of untimely Islanders errors en route to hanging up on their foes. Kagman 1-2-3 didn’t fare much better in the second game of the night, when they faced the pummeling powers of Proa.

The killer P’s taught 1-2-3 how to add by scoring 20 runs off of 21 hits in just five innings. Everybody and their pet frog Penelope scored for Proa, and they managed to do so by almost every means necessary.

Eric Lizama was a perfect 4-for-4 by bunting his way on base in each of his at bats. Jester Garcia went 2-for-3 at the plate, scoring twice. The first time was with an inside the park homerun, and the second was when he stole home. Proa scored with hits, homers, steals, and errors. All they needed was a bases loaded walk to complete the scoring cycle.

There was more of the same on Thursday, Sept. 16, when 1-2-3 returned to Oleai to face C-Bees 4 in the first game of the double-header. CB4 crushed the homesteaders, 12-1, in another five inning crushing led by joltin’ John Reyes. Reyes, a perfect 3-for-3, was just a single away from hitting for the cycle. He scored twice and had three RBI’s in the abbreviated outing. The youngster Ted Ngewaki managed to go 2-for-3 at the plate, scoring twice, and impressing everyone with his legendary longevity.

Verizon also made their way back to the field, but this time the outcome would not be as favorable for the captains of communication. The V-Team ran smack dab into a red-hot D-9ers team that doubled up on them to the tune of 24-12.

Actually, the teams were all tied up going into the sixth inning, when the D-9ers erupted for 12 runs off of 11 hits to demoralize Verizon. The V-men were unable to recover from the unexpected trouncing, and the game ended in a blow out.

Hats off to Mel Sakisat and Paul Camacho of the D-9ers, who each had a homer and a double in the sixth inning bruising.
