CFL season ready to rumble, bumble, and stumble
The football fans of Saipan are just one day away from being able to witness the return of the gridiron gladiators, as the Commonwealth Football League is all set to take the airport football field tomorrow to kick off the fourth season—island style.
At 10am, the hits, huts, and hurdles get underway, as the first-year Shell Chiefs take on the Miller Barbarians in the opening game of the season. Fans and players alike are sure to enjoy the fullback blasts, Hail Mary’s, and barbeques that the CFL has to offer.
Next week will feature the same heart-pounding action, as the Miller Barbarians return to the confines of the airport field to battle the Verizon Nitro at 10am.
The new schedule has been released, and the regular season will span nine-weeks, featuring a first-round playoff between the regular season’s second and third place finishers in a facemask-to-facemask fight to determine who “could-go-all-the-way” in “CFL BOWL IV” with the season champs the following week.
All of the games will be played at 10am on Saturdays, with the exception of the two Sunday afternoon match-ups between the Shell Chiefs and the Miller Barbarians, slated for 1pm on Oct. 10, and on the spooky Halloween edition of the CFL on Oct. 31.
This will be the fourth season for the league, and for only the second time in its existence, there will be no defending champion.
“It’s a whole new ball game this year. The championship’s definitely up for grabs,” said the CFL board chairman John S. Blanco.
