Hoe Lokahi Canoe Club fundraiser on April 28

The Hoe Lokahi Canoe Club is gearing up for its 2012 outrigger season and will be hosting its Cinco De Mayo-Happy Hour fundraiser event beachside at the Hyatt Regency Saipan on April 28 starting at 6pm.

In addition to food and beverages at discounted prices, the event will also feature live music and a raffle drawing. Tickets cost $10 and include one free drink.

The Hoe Lokahi Cano Club is a non-profit organization created back in 2010 that competed in the 2011 Micronesian Cup held on Guam.

“Hoe lokahi” is a Hawaiian term that translates into “paddle in harmony.”

The club is currently seeking new individuals that are interested in incorporating paddling into their lifestyle, whether they are a novice or are experienced in the sport.

“Outrigger paddling is an excellent workout that is both physically and mentally challenging. If you are looking to include a new exercise into your routine, love the ocean or just want to meet new people, this is the perfect opportunity,” offered the group’s public relations committee chair Leilani Nielsen.

The Hoe Lokahi club is currently accepting new members. Interested participants are welcome to stop by their weekly practice session held at the Saipan World Resort beach; they practice at 5pm on Monday and Wednesday evenings and at 7:30am on Saturday mornings.

The Hoe Lokahi 2012 race season starts on May 12 with its men and women’s mixed open 500-meter and 1,000-m sprints.

Then on June 16 and July 21’s events will feature men and women’s 500-m and 1500-m sprints, in addition to its junior boys and girls’ 500-m and 1000-m races.

Aug. 18 and 19 and Sept. 29 and 30 mark the dates for the group’s men and women’s sprint series as well the a men’s 10-kilometer and women’s 8-km open distance events.

The 2012 Micronesian Cup then rounds out the season on Oct. 27 and 28.
