SSA: If the sun’ll stay out, tomorrow
“Weather Permitting” is becoming an all to oft heard cliché that has transcended the word tired, gone past played out, and moved right into the place where “Not” and “Radical” have been laid to rest, only to be used once again.
Although there was an incredible amount of damage done to the Oleai Sports Complex, the scheduled sporting events are going to pick up right where they left off, weather permitting.
Without a steady supply of sunshine, area sports, other than swimming, have been put on hold for the better part of the last six weeks, but that is all about to change when the Saipan Softball Association retakes the field in Oleai this evening (hopefully).
The president of the Saipan Softball Association, Robert A. Guerrero, was optimistic when he said that the 2004 Men’s Island Wide Fast Pitch and Slow Pitch Softball Leagues would resume play a couple of weeks ago, and after a successful test of the lighting system at the softball field, things should be back to normal soon.
Currently, the boys with the DCCA still have their work cut out for them in order to get the field up an running for tonight’s contests. The list of tasks include untwisting the fence line along the third base side, repairing the homerun netting in the outfield, draining the infield pool, and removing the inverted bleaches from behind second base.
With only a handful of evacuees currently residing inside the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium, the DCCA employees will transition from 24-hour on-site monitors to a full-fledged repair crew, and according to the DCCA’s Joe Lizama, they will try to receive some assistance from the Saipan Mayor’s office.
