SFA fishing tournament is full sail ahead
The officers and members of the Saipan Fishermen’s Association met at the Hard Rock Cafe in Garapan yesterday to take care of a few last minute details associated with the 20th Annual Saipan International Fishing Tournament that will be held this weekend, all the while keeping an eye toward the future.
The fishermen gathered to further polish what promises to be a shining event, complete with excitement, anticipation, and plenty of fish tales. While the tournament was the main focus of the meeting, with the tournament just a few days away, the fisherman continued looking ahead to the future.
Members unanimously voted to weigh offers from different web site builders and launch a home page of their own, if the price is right. Although the association has been successfully hosting tournaments and promoting boating safety for the past 20 years, members agreed that the website would be an improvement.
“We have the potential of moving the association one step further,” said Martin Duenas.
Former president and one of the founding fathers of the association, Frank “Boy” Aldan, agreed with Duenas, explaining the benefits that the site can offer.
“Once we have our website, we can stay in contact with other associations in the world that can really help us to promote our event,” Aldan said.
The association that began with a handful of fishermen meeting under a tree over 20 years ago seems to be ready to take the leap into the 21st Century, but first they still have to tackle the biggest event in their history.
The tournament will get underway this Saturday, Sept. 11, in the deep waters off the coast of Saipan, and continue through Sunday, Sept. 12. Applications for the tournament are available at the Marianas Visitors Authority and the Fishing Tackle Shop. Registration for the event is this Friday, Sept. 10, from 5pm to 7pm at the Smiling Cove Marina in Garapan, followed by a pre-tournament briefing for all of the participants, and a blessing of the boats.
