DRIVING WITH CARE

Safety measures when on the road:

• Drive with both hands on the wheels (you can always make the phone call later);

• Don’t tailgate (keep at least a distance of one vehicle length between you and the other car in front of you);

• Don’t cut people off (they might not be able to step on the brakes quickly enough to avoid you);

• Keep your blind spots clear;

• Do a shoulder check before changing lanes;

• Use your turn signals;

• Be courteous;

• Drive in the proper lane of a multi-lane highway;

• Slow down (it takes longer to stop in wet weather);

• Turn your headlights on (if your lights are not working properly, get it checked);

• Avoid becoming a hydroplane (Never drive through moving water if you can’t see the ground through it).

Traffic Lights:

• A blinking red traffic light means you must come to complete stop;

A blinking yellow traffic light means you can proceed but do so with utmost caution;

• If the traffic lights are not working exercise courtesy and commonsense;

• Most importantly, if you are in the way of a responding emergency vehicle (police and fire), safely move to the right side of the road and let them through. You never know, the emergency call they’re responding to might be for a member of your family.

Before Traveling on the Road:

• Make sure your wiper blades are working properly and are not brittle

• Check the tread and inflation of your tires (properly maintained tires provide the added traction you will need on wet roads)

• Make sure your lights are all working properly

The Department of Safety’s Traffic Section is soliciting the assistance of the community in keeping order and sanity on CNMI’s roadways.

“We understand that there is another expected weather disturbance brewing. However, we must continue to conduct ourselves accordingly when out on the streets,” said Traffic Enforcement Supervisor Sgt. Sylvan M. Rangamar.

Any question, contact the Traffic Section.
