Man falls victim to theft by deception
A 32-year-old man notified police on Thursday that he fell victim to a theft by deception incident regarding a purchase of a vehicle.
Police report indicated that the victim, Sheng Hao Chen, bought a vehicle valued at $3,700 from a man known only as Shariful on July 19.
The report showed that the victim was told the vehicle’s mileage was 52,814, however, after buying the vehicle, the victim noticed that the mileage was over 100,000 miles, prompting him to ask for his money back.
“The victim first called the suspect and told him that he wanted his money back and [he would] return the vehicle because [the suspect] lied about the vehicle’s mileage,” the report stated.
Department of Public Safety acting public information officer Pete C. Muna said the suspect allegedly told the victim that the money was already used to buy another car and that he needed to borrow money from someone to return the money.
“The victim stated that the suspect did not return the money,” he said.
The victim called the suspect again, however, the suspect reportedly refused to return the money.
“Mr. Chen went to DPS central and filed a complaint against the suspect because he felt that he was deceived and cheated about the condition of the vehicle he bought from Shariful,” Muna said. “The victim stated that he doesn’t know much about Shariful, but knows him through a friend that he worked with.” (Shan Seman)
