Tinian welcomes Japanese volunteers
The 2nd Annual Tinian Japan Summer Volunteer Program kicked off last July 26 with the arrival of six volunteer college students from Japan.
Edwin P. Aldan, the chairman of the 10th Tinian Municipal Council, vice-chairman Jude U. Hofschneider, and secretary Patrick A. Manglona officiated the welcoming activity for the Japanese volunteer students.
The program was created by the 9th Tinian Municipal Council and continued by the current Municipal Council as a way to promote cultural exchange between the island of Tinian and Japan.
This year, the four female and two male volunteers who are participating in this year’s program are Yuka Ito, Hiroko Suzuki, Kurumi Masaki, Miho Mikami, Kazuyuki Koizumi, and Keiichirou Motohashi, all of whom attend various colleges, including the prestigious Waseda University in Japan.
The six youthful college students will spend 21 days on Tinian volunteering their time teaching games and activities based on after-school Japanese language and culture classes.
While on Tinian, the students will also take part in a home-stay program and special cultural classes to give them a better understanding of the Tinian’s rich culture and history.
When asked about the outlook for this year’s program chairman Aldan said, “With the combined efforts of this wonderful group of volunteers from Japan and our dedicated staff at the Municipal Council, I am very confident that this year’s program will be successful and that it will benefit a large number of Tinian youth.”
To be eligible for the after-school classes, students need to be enrolled in the 2004-2005 school year as second to seventh graders. Application and waiver forms are being sent out to government and autonomous agencies, numerous retail stores, and/or are made available at the Tinian Municipal Council Office.
Classes will begin on Aug, 2 and will continue until Aug, 13, Monday to Friday from 4:30pm to 6:15 pm at the Tinian Junior/Senior High School Campus rooms V3 & V4.
