Twenty-two students from Rota and Saipan have been accepted to participate in the Northern Marianas College ADAP High School Apprenticeship program, which aims to give them hands-on experience on agriculture and food processing principles.

The students are already done with their agricultural training—which took up the first two weeks of the program—and are now undergoing sessions in food processing and preservations. The session is being conducted by Edgar Cocker, the associate director for family and consumer science.

“It gave me a greater motivation to strive further in my education. There are so many things that I have learned that I’ve never even thought about before and the program is not even over yet,” said Wilet Reiman, one of the participants.

Racquel Mendoza said the things that they are now learning will have a big impact on the rest of their lives. “We are learning how to save so much money just by cooking up a dish using local products. We’re also learning how to live healthy, what not to eat, and the right stuff to eat,” she said.

Alvie Sanchez is simply grateful to be a part of the program. “The program has a lot to contribute in what my group is learning too. I really wish that we could share our knowledge with everyone else on island,” Sanchez said.

Trainings are held at the Cooperative Research, Extension and Education Service laboratory from 9am to 4pm. The program is expected to end on July 30.
