10 Saipan sites red-flagged
The Division of Environmental Quality has raised the red flag on 10 beach sites on Saipan after samples collected were found to contain excessive concentrations of two fecal indicator bacteria, making them unsafe for swimming or fishing.
These sites are the DPW Channel Bridge, South Puerto Rico Dump, Dai-Ichi Hotel Beach, Drainage #1, Samoa Housing Beach, Hafa Adai Hotel Beach, Drainage #2, Garapan Fishing Dock, Sugar Dock, CK District 4 Lally Beach.
The DEQ statement said that concentrations of two fecal indicator bacteria—fecal coliform and enterococci—exceeded the CNMI Marine Water Quality Standards. These bacteria can indicate the presence of human and animal waste in the water.
“Therefore, In order to adequately address public health concerns, DEQ has given [these] locations a red flag and advises the public not to fish or swim within 300 feet of these locations for the next 48 hours or until otherwise notified,” the DEQ statement adds.
DEQ analyzes samples of marine recreational and storm drainage water from 38 locations on the Saipan’s Coast.
The agency also analyzed 11 water samples collected from Mañagaha’s recreational beaches and dock and none of the samples collected contained excessive concentrations of fecal indicator bacteria nor did they exceed the CNMI Marine Water Quality Standards.
“DEQ assigns the sampled beach site a green flag. Enjoy our waters,” the agency said.
DEQ welcomes all inquiries as to the quality of the beach water. The public is encouraged to contact DEQ at 664-8500 with any questions.
