NMC summer youth programs extended
The two summer youth programs at the Northern Marianas College that were originally set to end yesterday have been extended due to several cancelled sessions courtesy of Typhoon Tingting.
According to Community Development Institute program coordinator Dawn Chrystal Kenney, both programs lost two days due to the bad weather. This means sessions would continue until Wednesday, July 9.
The two programs—Project L.I.F.E. and Camp L.I.F.E.—aim to prepare the youth for upcoming challenges in high school or in the workforce.
Project L.I.F.E. (Lead Into Future Experiences) is designed to develop leadership skills and comprises youths between the ages of 12 and 14.
Earlier, Kenney said the program would feature various ways of learning leadership skills, including public speaking, stress management, team building, event planning, conflict mediation, goal setting, and more. Participants will be involved in activities and workshops dealing with the issues.
Camp L.I.F.E. ((Lead, Imagine, Foster, Experience), for its part, features children between ages eight and 11.
A total of 14 kids are enrolled in the Project L.I.F.E. while Camp L.I.F.E. has 10 enrollees.
Both programs kicked off June 14, and after almost three weeks, have progressed into “something that would most likely become a yearly thing.” Earlier, Kenney said the outcome and turnout of the programs would determine if both would continue in the years to come.
“The older kids are really starting to bond while the younger kids are certainly having a good time,” she said. “They are taking part in various activities. We’ve been receiving a lot of positive feedback, and so I think this is turning into something that we would continue yearly.”
