It was all about championships and openings this past week in sports.

Last Sunday, the 2004 UFO-San Miguel Cup was unveiled at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium with 12 of the 13 teams joining the parade.

Statuesque stunner Madelyn Lopez of Cabalen-RP Construction won the Best Muse plum, while Bayani bagged its second straight Best Uniform award.

Results of games saw defending champion Visminda and runner-up Cabalen outplay foes Sunday, while Thursday’s schedule had Bayani and SIP overcoming their opponents.

On Sunday at the Pacific Islands Club sand courts, the 6th Annual Seaside Grille Beach Volleyball Weekend got served with Tomo Obata and Nan Intharaluk capturing the men’s doubles and Jennifer Williamson and Keiko Iwami bagging the women’s title. In team competition, World Peace took the championship.

A total of 82 entries, meanwhile, saw action in the June Pepsi King of the Lanes held Sunday and Monday at the Capitol Bowling Center. Winning the men’s division was John Santos, while Emi Williams took home her third women’s title of the year.

The Saipan Major League finally had a playoff game under its belt after the Miller Lite Brewers routed the Pirates, 13-3, Wednesday at the Francisco M. Palacios baseball field.

Like the SML, the Inter-Restaurant Basketball League also finally got to play following days of rainouts. But Country House and Jollibee took their game too seriously with the former winning a rugged contest.
