Mt. Carmel graduate shines
Mt. Carmel High School graduate Christine P. Fitial is certainly headed in a bright direction in terms of pursuing higher education.
As a senior at the school, Fitial applied to and was granted admission to various reputable universities in the U.S. mainland, including Florida State University, Purdue University, Arizona State University, Syracuse University, and San Diego State University.
Further, the 18-year-old standout, daughter of House Speaker Benigno and Josie Fitial, was also awarded a $6,000 scholarship from Syracuse as well as the Sun Devil Scholarship from Arizona State in recognition of her outstanding academic achievement.
MCS officials took pride in Fitial’s achievements, with the letter awarding her the $6,000 scholarship being displayed at the school’s bulletin board.
Fitial, however, declined the offers, setting her mind on San Diego State.
An honor student, Fitial maintained a 4.0 Grade Point Average throughout her tenure from elementary to high school, and was a recipient of various educational awards. Her achievements include winning a Spelling Bee contest, earning Best in Math certificates, and recipient of Honorable Mention awards for Science and Social Studies, to name a few. She was also the president of the Mt. Carmel senior class of 2004 and a member of the National Honor Society, displaying versatility in a number of extracurricular activities, including suiting up as a school athlete in both basketball and volleyball.
“I am very proud of my daughter’s academic achievement,” the Speaker said. “She has maintained a high GPA at Mt. Carmel, and has been accepted by various universities, which is a very strong indication that she is academically gifted. I wish her the best that life can bestow on to her to successfully accomplish her goals.”
Fitial is scheduled to depart for San Diego State on July 15 pursuing study in medicine.
