Humanities council, NFL lauded

The 8th Saipan and Northern Islands Municipal Council recently adopted a resolution recognizing, congratulating and commending the Northern Mariana Islands Council for the Humanities and the National Forensic League of the Western Pacific for sponsoring the 2nd Annual Covenant Day Debate.

The debate, composed of two divisions, was held at the Senate chamber of the CNMI Legislature on Capitol Hill, Saipan, last March 22.

In the National Forensic League-Senior Division, the contestants were Sarah Blalock, Marianas High School; Matthew Deleon Guerrero, Mt. Carmel High School; Dong Hwi Lee, Marianas Baptist Academy; In Yong Chung, Marianas Baptist Academy; and Roselle Calvo, Marianas Baptist Academy.

In the National Junior Forensic League-Junior Division, the contestants were Jamie Ferejan, Marianas Baptist Academy; Jeffrey Cacani, Hopwood Junior High School; Jesse C. Sablan “Kilili,” Marianas Baptist Academy; and Sonia Castro, Marianas Baptist Academy.

The judges of the debate were William R. Barrineau; former lieutenant governor and chief justice Jesus C. Borja; Lorenzo Dlg. Cabrera; former judge Edward Manibusan; Samuel McPhetres; former Marianas Political Status Commission chair Vicente N. Santos; John S. Del Rosario; and lawyer Steve Woodruff.

In the senior division, the winners were Blalock, who captured 1st place; Deleon Guerrero, , 2nd place and Lee, 3rd place.

In the Junior Division, Fejeran took 1st place; Bacani, 2nd place; and Sablan, 3rd place.

The debate was officiated by Stephen Smith, coordinator, Western Pacific Region National Forensic League; Carmen C. Gaskins, chair of the NMI Council for the Humanities; Patricia B. Coleman, debate moderator and Issac Magofna, executive director of the NMI Council for the Humanities.

“The members of the municipal council and the people of the CNMI are extremely proud of the NMI Council and the staff for the Humanities and Western Pacific Region National Forensic League, in making this Covenant Day Debate an important event in the CNMI,” the municipal council said in a statement.

The resolution was certified by chairman Gregorio V. Deleon Guerrero, and vice chairman David A. Indalecio and attested by secretary Antonia M. Tudela.
