Sideout tattoos were doled out free of charge Tuesday night as the fifth consecutive Coors Light Co-ed Beach Volleyball League continued on the sand courts behind the Pacific Islands Club.

Team 9, Gansha and the Cleveland Steamers were able to edge the competition while Faulker (3-1), Givity (1-3), and That’s Not Yogurt (0-4) caught up on all of the books that they’ve been meaning to read.

The night’s first three-set showdown featured the Cleveland Steamers dropping a bomb on Government Cheese, winning two of the three sets. The Steam dumped on the Cheese 11-7 in the first set, only to have the score turned around on them in the second. The Cleveland Steamers took the loss in stride and walloped the Cheese 11-3 in the third to advance their record to 3-2. Their next opponent is the Cyphers, Tuesday, June 1 at 6pm. Government Cheese next faces Faulker, also Thursday night at 7pm.

The second pair of teams that went hand-to-hand in the sand was Gansha and Rusty Slinkys. Gansha polished off the Rusty Slinkys in the first set 11-8 before getting smoked in the second 7-11. Gansha was able to puff it out, winning the final set 11-9 to keep pace with the Steamers at 3-2. After starting the season at 2-0, the Slinkys have now dropped three in a row. Their next match-up is with Givity on Tuesday, June 1, at 8pm, while Gansha hits the sand tonight in the 8pm match with Faulker.

In the highlight match of the night, Team 9 upended Cyphers, handing the league’s top team its first loss of the season. Neither team could come up with a two-point victory until Team 9 reached 15. They were able to keep the momentum on their side as they throttled the first place Cyphers 11-2 in the second. Though they lost the final set 11-3, Team 9 advanced to first place, sharing an identical 4-1 record with Cyphers. The Nine sit alone in first via head-to-head tiebreaker, as they head into tonight’s 6pm match-up with That’s Not Yogurt. Cyphers will try to regain their winning ways against Givity at 7pm.

Games are played Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6pm, 7pm, and 8pm through the end of the season on Thursday, June 13.

The team with the best win-loss record after eight games will be crowned the regular season champ, and a single-elimination tournament will be played Tuesday, June 15, for additional prizes.

Each team of seven players is permitted four players on the court, with the stipulation that one female be on the court at all times.

All the side-outs you can handle will be doled out again tonight at the PIC. If you would like further information about the Coors Light 4-Person Beach Volleyball League 2004, contact the Pacific Islands Club by calling 235-6231.
