It’s a big celebration for local farmers this month as they observe their silver annual agricultural fair on May 28 to 30.

Agri Fair organizers led by acting chair Matias Chargualaf and Division of Agriculture acting director Ben Borja said more participants are expected to join this year and more activities are lined up for the public to enjoy.

Also, they said that prizes for winners were increased for this year.

“This year is particularly special because this is the silver anniversary,” said Chargualaf.

He said more than the usual farm animal and farm produce exhibits, this year’s celebration will feature other activities such as bingo games, cockfighting, batu or hard metal throwing game, greased pig catching, greased pole climbing, and coconut grinding and coconut husking contests.

“It will be more enjoyable for everybody,” said agriculture specialist Isidoro Cabrera.

The three-day fair at the Civic Center in Susupe serves as the highlight of Mes Lancheros (Farmers Month) proclamation celebration this month.

Farmers and ranchers have until May 28 to register for the competitions and submit entries.

Under the rules, each person must pay $10 plus an additional $1 for each entry for both the Plant and Animal divisions.

Borja said another competition would feature fruit preservatives or local jams.

The Agricultural Fair provides local farmers and ranchers an opportunity to display their livestock and locally-grown produce, at the same time win prizes.

The annual activity is organized by the Saipan Agricultural Fair Association, Department of Lands and Natural Resources, Northern Marianas College-CREES, and the Commonwealth Development Authority.

Gov. Juan N. Babauta earlier signed a proclamation declaring the month of May as Mes Lancheros in recognition of all farmers and ranchers in the CNMI for their contribution to the local economy.
