Northern Marianas College president Sharon Y. Hart and Board of Regents chair Juan T. Lizama are now in California to testify at the assembly of the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges this week.

The two officials are scheduled to speak today on how the college is meeting the commission’s accreditation standards and eligibility requirements.

The two-day conference is slated for Jan. 10 and 11. The college expects to get word in February whether it will retain its accreditation.

Saipan Tribune learned that Day 1 of the meeting is a public session, while the second day is for the commission’s executive session, where the college’s accreditation status will be specifically discussed.

NMC is currently on probation following its failure to address team recommendations in its show-cause report. These recommendations aim to address deficiencies in three areas: autonomy from outside interference, financial management and integrity, and governance and accountability.

In a statement to Saipan Tribune yesterday, NMC said that both Hart and Lizama will be providing information that demonstrates NMC’s compliance with accreditation standards. Hart is expected to present an oral report to the commission, disclosing additional progress and successes of the college in meeting accreditation standards.

NMC said it is unable at this time to give further details about its presentation at the California assembly due to the commission’s policy on public disclosure.

In the meantime, Hart, in a statement yesterday, stressed that the college is already busy preparing for the self-evaluation report that is due for submission to the commission later this year.
