Veteran player/coach Ed Manalili has been named commissioner for the 2012 UFO Inter-Organization Basketball Friendship League.

Manalili, who plays in masters league and has been coaching youth teams, will oversee UFO caging games and other matters related to the league, which has moved its opening day from April 15 to April 29.

This year’s UFO caging will have competitions in four divisions: U14, 15 to 20, 21 to 39, and 40-and-above. League organizers will accept a maximum of eight teams per division and representatives of each interested squad are requested to attend a meeting today at 5:30pm.

The meeting will be held at the Civic Center Basketball Court in Susupe and topics to be discussed include the opening ceremony and league ground rules.

So far, the U14 division, the newest addition in the league, has lured four teams, the same number of squads the 21 to 39 and 40-and-above have at present. In the 15 to 20 age group, three teams so far have expressed interests in competing in the UFO caging.

Expected to return for the 21 to 39 division is back-to-back champion Ali’i Konflikt, which pulled off an upset over the then undefeated and CNMI players-bannered Proa. Ali’i Konflikt won the one-game finals, 94-79.

There was also an upset in the 40-and-above division with MDX/Armatech surprising 2010 champion Cabalen/Wings Travel, 84-79. In the inaugural 15 to 20 division, the Jets defeated Filcag in the finals, 86-80.

Meanwhile, this year’s UFO games will be played every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday at the Gillette Multipurpose Gymnasium of the TSL Sports Complex and Sunday at the Civic Center Court.
