Rep. Janet Maratita (Ind-Saipan) now chairs the House Committee on Education, replacing Rep. Ray Palacios (Cov-Saipan) who stepped down as committee chair in November after he was accused of “ice” trafficking.

Maratita said yesterday she accepted the post and hopes to make a difference.

“It would be a blatant disregard of public trust if I don’t accept the important position of heading the Education Committee. We all want to make a difference in the lives of children,” said Maratita after a visit to Hopwood Junior High School.

Maratita said that everyone should put the welfare of people ahead of political parties, acknowledging that her acceptance of the post might be construed as a politically motivated.

House Speaker Eli Cabrera (R-Saipan) appointed Maratita as committee chair in December, and Maratita has now been attending leadership meetings.

Maratita, who is completing the term left by former representative Diego Benavante who resigned in July, said she has yet to decide whether to run for office again in November and whether to remain independent or run under Gov. Benigno R. Fitial’s Republican Party.
