Woman on trial for immigration fraud

The jury trial of a woman charged with immigration document fraud began Monday in the U.S. District Court for the NMI.

When Saipan Tribune left the courtroom in the afternoon, Chief Judge Ramona V. Manglona was still selecting the jurors who will decide the fate of Rowena Agnes Urumelog.

Saipan Tribune learned that a jury was impaneled later in the afternoon and assistant U.S. attorney Beverly McCallum and defense attorney Mark Hanson completed their opening statements. McCallum also called the prosecution’s first witness.

According to the indictment filed on Sept. 22, on July 6, 2009, Urumelog filed a petition for an alien relative, on which she said no when asked whether she had ever petitioned for Abdullah Al Mamun or another alien. The defendant allegedly knew that this was false in that on Jan. 22, 2003, she filed a petition for an alien relative for her then-husband, Md. Jahangir Alam.
