Two suspected ‘ice’ suppliers fall; suspect claims police beat him up

Two suspected suppliers of methamphetamine or “ice” were arrested on Saipan Monday night, and one of the two suspects who had injuries on his face told the Superior Court at yesterday’s hearing that police beat him up.
Jun Qing Cheng, 36, and Yu Hua Wang, 34, both jobless Chinese nationals, were arrested for trafficking of a controlled substance, possession of controlled substance, and resisting arrest.
Associate judge Joseph James Norita Camacho imposed a $60,000 cash bail for each suspect. Preliminary hearing will be on Dec. 12 at 9am.
Assistant public defender Benjamin Petersburg was appointed to serve as counsel for Wang, while the court will appoint a private counsel for Cheng.
Assistant attorney general Nicole Driscoll called to the witness stand detective Dennis Reyes who narrated to the court how they were able to buy $200 and $400 worth of “ice” from Cheng and Wang in two operations.
Reyes said that 4.45 gross grams of “ice” worth $7,000 was involved as they also recovered more methamphetamine from one of the suspects’ cars.
The detective said that when they tried to pull over the suspects’ vehicles in Koblerville and San Antonio, the suspects were uncooperative and resisted arrest.
When Camacho asked about Cheng’s bandage on his face, Reyes said that Cheng was tackled to the ground for resisting arrest.
Cheng, through an interpreter, told the judge that he will sue for police brutality.
Camacho told Cheng he has that right, but that he needs to hire a lawyer to do so as it would be a civil matter.
