A man who beat up his wife and repeatedly hit her face with a meat cleaver during an argument has pleaded guilty and was slapped with a four-month prison term.
Mashud Rana, 24, pleaded guilty on Wednesday to assault and battery as part of a plea deal and was sentenced to a year in jail, all suspended except for four months, with credit for time served.
Rana will start serving his sentence on April 27, 2012.
Superior Court Associate Judge David A. Wiseman also ordered Rana to pay a $500 fine, $25 court assessment fee, plus probation fee, and to pay all the medical fees associated with the victim’s injuries, as well as restitution.
After completing his sentence, Rana will be placed on two years of probation. He was required to undergo alcohol and drug counseling during the first year of probation.
Rana beat up the wife on Nov. 14, 2011, on Saipan, pulling her hair, slapping her, and repeatedly hitting her in the face with a meat cleaver. Except for swelling on the left side of her face, the victim did not suffer any cuts from the attack.
The victim told police that had responded to a report about a domestic violence in Garapan that she and Rana, had an argument over their dinner food that was too spicy.
During court proceedings, however, the wife wrote the court a letter, saying she wants to fix their marriage. The wife said she loves Rana and that the fight happened because of a misunderstanding and her being stubborn and ignorant. She said at the time, they started arguing about their financial and emotional problems.
The wife said that Rana is a good husband and a stepfather to her four daughters.
