An ex-convict who was indicted in federal court for possession of a firearm and ammunition was remanded into the custody of the U.S. Marshal on Friday.
Justin A. Funkugub appeared in the U.S. District Court for the NMI with his court-appointed counsel, Ramona Quichocho, late Friday afternoon for his initial appearance.
Chief Judge Ramona V. Manglona set Funkugub’s detention hearing and arraignment for Thursday, Jan. 12 at 1:30pm.
The indictment charged Funkugub with one count of felon in possession of a firearm; one count of possession of a firearm with a removed, altered, or obliterated serial number; and one count of felon in possession of ammunition.
According to the indictment filed Thursday, Funkugub was convicted on Sept. 21, 2000, in the Superior Court of cattle killing, which is punishable by imprisonment for a term exceeding one year.
On Oct. 11, 2011, the defendant allegedly possessed one Smith and Wesson, Model 12-3, .38 caliber snub-nose revolver. The revolver’s manufacturer’s serial number had been removed, altered, or obliterated, a violation of U.S. Code, according to the indictment.
That same date, Funkugub also allegedly possessed ammunition: six Winchester Super-X .22 caliber bullets.
The Office of the Attorney General had charged the 35-year-old Funkugub with assault and battery, unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, and disturbing the peace, over the alleged assault of a relative and firing a handgun in As Teo area on Oct. 11, 2011.
