Police arrested Saturday a man who allegedly pointed a gun at another man who had asked him for a cigarette in western Garapan.

Detective Simon Manacop served the arrest warrant on Ji Jing Borja, 22, alias Jimmy, in San Jose, Tinian, Saturday morning.

Borja, an employee of Duty Free Shoppers in Garapan, was taken to the Superior Court yesterday morning on charges of assault with a dangerous weapon, assault, illegal possession of a firearm, and disturbing the peace. His bail was set at $10,750 cash.

Associate judge Kenneth Govendo found Borja ineligible for a court-appointed counsel. Preliminary hearing will be on Jan. 19, 2012 at 9am.

Police officers had responded to western Garapan on Wednesday at 10:52pm after receiving a call for a possible attempted murder.

Witnesses allegedly told police that Borja had pointed a handgun at victim Jerry Sammy and that a security personnel was able to take the weapon away from Borja. Officers recovered the gun, a Ruger P89 9mm with one 15-round empty magazine.

According to the victim’s statement to police, he had gone behind GIG Discotheque when he saw a Chinese man, later identified as Borja, walking out from Riu Jin Store. The victim said he asked Borja to give him a cigarette, but the suspect told him he doesn’t have any. When Sammy insisted that he could see a pack of cigarettes in his hand, Borja ignored him and walked to his vehicle. A few seconds later, Sammy said he saw Borja pointing a handgun at his face. Borja allegedly threatened the victim that he was going to kill him if he sees him in Garapan again.

A security personnel then came and grabbed the gun from Borja, who kept asking the security personnel to give him back his gun. When the security personnel walked away, Borja walked into his vehicle and drove off.

The security personnel said that Borja, whom he met two months ago, would always hang out in the area because his girlfriend is the manager of a massage parlor.

The security personnel identified Borja in a photo lineup shown him by police.
