Garapan Elementary School students selected a new set of leaders who will represent their concerns and voices.
Sixth grader Joyce Anne Nisola was voted student council president for this school year. Along with newly elected vice president John Jacob Canape, secretary Jemimah Colegio, and treasurer Leonardo Salalila, Nisola was congratulated by Supreme Court acting chief justice Alexandro Castro in a special ceremony Tuesday on campus.
Castro, who inducted the new officers and members of the GES student council, encouraged them to become role models and ambassador of goodwill to all their peers. Castro said the student council is a great opportunity for every student to assume the role of leaders that will help them become responsible members of the community.
Derwin Johnson, school counselor and one of the council’s advisers, said that GES makes sure that the council is given the proper attention because students are the school’s highest priority.
Through the student council, upper graders are given the chance to better understand their roles as students, as young leaders, and as citizens of the community, Johnson said.
He said the council has been instrumental in addressing issues and requirements about accreditation and other areas because the organization collaborates and provides input to the school.
According to Johnson, among the objectives of the student organization is to strive for good citizenship, respect for all individuals in the school and community, involve all students in sharing ideas to make the school the best it can be, help all students work together, and give all students the chance to practice democracy in action.
Any officer or representative may be removed from office by a majority vote of the student council membership for poor attendance at council meetings, failure to perform required duties, or failure to follow school rules or class rules.
