A senior student of Saipan Southern High School was named Friday a Quest Bridge scholar for school year 2011-2012.
Lallane Guiao is the second Pacific Islander to accomplish such a feat, next to Darren Demapan who now attends Stanford University.
As a Quest Bridge scholar, Guiao’s college expenses will all be paid for by the scholarship program. Her college scholarship grant amounts to $58,671.
“I am truly honored to have been selected for this scholarship. It’s like a dream come true. My family is extremely proud of me. I would not have been able to accomplish this if it weren’t for their motivation,” she told Saipan Tribune yesterday.
Guiao will enroll at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut.
She said she is thinking of majoring in political science in preparation for a degree in law. Guaio said she applied for the program and was extremely overwhelmed when she received the good news Friday.
She believes that she was selected because of her academics, extra-curricular involvements, and community service.
The Quest Bridge Scholarship is a four-year scholarship covering everything from tuition to board.
Guiao revealed that it was Demapan, also from the CNMI public high school, who encouraged her to apply for the Quest Bridge scholarship.
QuestBridge is a non-profit organization that has worked since 1994 to connect bright, motivated low-income students with educational and scholarship opportunities at some of the nation’s best colleges and universities.
