A man who had just checked out of the hospital was injured when he fell asleep and a van he was driving slammed into a tree along the side of Beach Road in Chalan Laulau Saturday morning.
Edwin Sta. Theresa, production manager of Digital Motion, sustained bruises and lacerations on his left arm. Paramedics treated him at the scene.
Sta. Theresa was driving south aboard a Toyota Previa van along Beach Road when the accident happened around 8:10am near Triple J Motors.
The van swerved to the right, slammed into a big pine tree, then fell on its left side on the shoulder of the road.
Sta. Theresa managed to get down from the van and sat on the pathway. Passersby immediately called 911.
After a few minutes, paramedics and police officers arrived.
Sta. Theresa told paramedics and police officers that he had just come out from the Commonwealth Health Center where he was treated for stomach cramps.
He said he fell asleep while driving the van, causing the mishap.
After being treated at the scene, Saipan Tribune saw Sta. Theresa holding his bloodied left arm while watching a truck tow away the van.
It was not clear whether Sta. Theresa went back to CHC for further treatment.
The van had extensive damage on the front.
