The Northern Marianas College expects to receive next week a report issued by the visiting team from the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges that outlines their findings during their visit to the college in November.
In her report to the Board of Regents, NMC president Sharon Hart said that the commission encourages college officials to participate in next month’s assembly in San Francisco, Calif., where it will tackle the exit report.
Hart said the commission meeting may take place between Jan. 10 and 12, during which NMC officials will also be asked to report additional information about its accreditation progress.
Hart said that a decision on the college’s accreditation is expected in the first week of February.
NMC is currently on probation with the commission for failing to address concerns outlined in its show-cause report. These recommendations aim to address deficiencies in three areas: institutional autonomy from outside interference, institutional financial management and integrity, and institutional governance and accountability.
ACCJC associate vice president Norval Wellsfry, University of Hawaii Windward Community College chancellor Douglas Dykstra, University of Guam senior vice president Dr. Helen Whippy, and Susan Murata of Kapiolani Community College were on island from Nov. 7 to 9 to validate the content of the Oct. 15 report that NMC submitted to the commission. During the three-day visit and inspection, the team observed how regents conduct and decide on issues affecting the college.
Hart said that NMC is now working on a supplemental report that is due on Dec. 30. The first draft of the report is slated for next week before formal presentation to the board. “We’re on target on all our accreditation works and we expect to submit our supplemental report on time.”
According to the president, ACCJC also requested NMC to undergo training in March to help the college prepare for a full accreditation visit next year.
