Karidat executive director Angie V. Guerrero noted that more people are now reporting domestic violence and sexual abuse cases, citing awareness campaigns as an important tool in educating the community about the importance of reporting such incidents.

In 2010 alone, Guerrero disclosed that 70 individuals sought the assistance of Karidat to file temporary restraining orders against their abusive partners. This is about 19-percent increase from the 59 individuals who asked for help in 2009.

Guerrero noted, however, that their numbers do not include cases handled by the Family Violence Intervention Center on Capital Hill.

Guerrero believes that the public is becoming aware of the negative impacts of domestic violence in the community.

“Maybe because more awareness campaigns are being conducted, that’s why people are coming out of the closet and they’re not feeling alone so they are reporting more of the domestic violence that’s happening,” she told Saipan Tribune.

Still, Guerrero continues to hope for a violence-free community that she said is possible by having respect for others.

“Do unto others what you want others do unto you. That’s the Golden Rule. If everybody abides by that, we could be one happy, violence-free community,” she added.
