Ken Duenas of Guam and Jojo Talibong shared pool honors winning the Budweiser 9-Ball and 8-Ball billiards tournaments, respectively last week at the Corner Pocket Pool Bar in Garapan.

Duenas beat Rolly Villanueva in the finals match 4-2, to win the Monday night 9-ball pool challenge.

His win capped an all-night display of brilliant pool by the visiting Beach Road Magazine general manager who had once before won an 8-ball event also at Corner Pocket.

First to fall victim to Duenas’ streak shooting was top seed Roger Espiritu who lost by a score of 2-4. Next, Duenas beat Vic S. Hocog, 4-5, in a down-the-wire match whose outcome could have gone the other way.

The win paved the way to a finals match against another top player, Villanueva.

But Duenas was all business in the finals as he easily subdued Villanueva, who had previously beaten Joey Lucido, 5-3, and Jojo Talibong, 4-1.

The 9-ball competition sponsored by Budweiser every Monday night is played on a single round format where the two top players who emerge unbeaten tangle for the weekly championship and the case prizes.

Meanwhile, at the 8-ball event on Tuesday, Talibong beat Zheng Cheng twice in the finals match to win the weekly championship.

Talibong had previously beat Bryan Cool and Senen Pangilinan but lost to Zheng in the next game to be relegated to the losers bracket.

He, however, beat Pangilinan a second time to top the losers’ bracket and play Zheng for first place.

Zheng for his part earned a trip to the finals with a twice-to-beat status by beating Villanueva, Raffy Arroyo and Talibong.

The 8-ball challenge is played using a double-round elimination format. First, second and third placers get to win 50, 30 and 20 percent, respectively, of all entry fees collected.

Organizers of both the 8-ball and 9-ball events have put in place a handicapping system to give everyone equal odds at winning the championship.
