Associate justice John A. Manglona has been serving as acting chief justice in the CNMI Supreme Court since last Monday after associate justice Alexandro C. Castro took a sick leave.
Saipan Tribune sources disclosed that Castro suffered a mild stroke and has been recuperating at his house.
CNMI Supreme Court public information officer Jim Stowell on Friday said the minor stroke is something that he can’t confirm whether it is true or false.
Stowell said he also has no information about the status of Castro’s health.
“What I can only tell you is that he’s (Castro) on sick leave and Manglona is the acting chief justice,” Stowell told Saipan Tribune.
When Miguel S. Demapan, citing health reasons, retired as chief justice last September, Castro served as acting chief justice.
Gov. Benigno R. Fitial has yet to announce his nomination for the new chief justice.
Castro ascended to the Supreme Court bench on July 9, 1998. In 2005, voters retained him to the high court’s bench.
Castro and Superior associate judges David A. Wiseman and Perry B. Inos will be up for retention election this November.
