Gov. Pedro P. Tenorio yesterday urged all government agencies and the CNMI community to observe the 20th anniversary of the Northern Marianas College.

The island’s highest executive made the proclamation in the presence of NMC officials which included the college’s President Jack Sablan, alumni and students.

In his short speech congratulating the NMC, the governor praised the college for its continued success and reiterated his call that education is very important to the youth.

The NMC president also noted that the year 2001 is not only significant because it marks the college’s 20th year anniversary. He said it is also important because the NMC would finally be able to offer a four-year bachelor of arts degree in education for its students.

NMC’s bachelor of arts in education program has been accredited by both the senior and junior commissions of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.

Students and alumni also came forward in thanking the college for the role it played in their young lives and for its efforts in commemorating the 20th anniversary of its inauguration.

“The college is quite symbolic. I was born here, I’m going to graduate from here and when I come back from the states, I hope to eventually work here,” graduating student and student council vice president Christopher Cabrera said.

The site of the present college was once home to the Dr. Torres Memorial Hospital. That is why a number of its students and alumni also call the school their places of birth.

The NMC was established in March 23, 1981 and today has grown to an institution which offers 18 associate degree programs, 21 certificate of achievement options and 11 certificate of completion programs.

Since its birth, the college has graduated over 1,300 individuals in Certificates of Completion and Achievement, and Associate, Baccalaureate and Masters degrees.
