Gov. Pedro P. Tenorio has asked the Division of Public Lands to relocate several farmers occupying government properties in Marpi to other areas on the island to allow the prompt implementation of the much-delayed bird mitigation project.

While expressing sympathy to the displaced farmers, Mr. Tenorio said they have been given enough time to relocate since they had been handed notices since last year.

“We have informed them since last year that the government would be needing the properties for a number of important projects,” he told reporters in an interview after a proclamation signing at the administration grounds yesterday.

The Board of Public Lands last week sued a local resident who allegedly erected a semi-concrete residential structure on a public land in Marpi designated for agriculture and cattle grazing.

In April 1992, the Marianas Public Land Corporation issued a one year permit to Regino T. Camacho for the use of a three-hectare public land in Marpi on which to perform agricultural and grazing activities.

The Division of Public Lands last May 7, 1999 later on found out that Mr. Camacho built a permanent structure on the piece of public land without authorization from the government agency.

Court papers said Mr. Camacho’s permit, which supposedly expired one year after April 2, 1992, also gives credence to the BPL’s claim of trespassing on public property.

The public lands reportedly issued two eviction notices to the defendant since May 13, 1999. BPL said Mr. Camacho has refused to vacate the property to date.
