Measures to ensure safety of Managaha tourists eyed
Local leaders are poised at instituting more stringent security measures that would keep sinister elements from harming any more tourists who hop to the Managaha Island for fun and relaxation activities.
This, after an unfortunate mauling incident involving a Japanese tourist occurred on the remote island over the weekend, which leaders perceive as an assault to the local tourism industry.
The 28-year-old lady victim had to be transported to the local hospital for severe facial injuries.
Rep. Malua Peter disclosed the leadership’s plan to introduce a House resolution that would establish a fortified system of protection for tourists bound for the island west of Saipan.
In an interview, Ms. Peter proposed for more Department of Public Safety-manned stations to be installed to oversee the safety of local as well as foreign Managaha visitors.
The additional safety measures would promote zero tolerance on the part of negative characters to spring their criminal acts especially on unsuspecting foreign tourists who come to the Northern Marianas to unwind.
“We are spending millions to advertise the islands. Seeing our visitors being raped, harassed, and attacked is bad for the industry. And this is something that needs to be addressed immediately,” said Ms. Peter.
Meanwhile, the Japanese tourist’s alleged attacker, 20-year-old Regis Iyekar, was brought before the Superior Court for assault and battery charges.
The suspect confessed to having grabbed and punched the victim after the incident occurred last Saturday.
Court documents submitted by Detective Mark S. Taisacan state that the suspect covered the victim’s mouth to prevent her from screaming, and punched her several times on the mouth and face.
Afterwards, she was dragged to a nearby bush where she struggled to free herself from Mr. Iyekar and managed to seek help from nearby Korean tourists walking in the area.
DPS Boating Safety officers were contacted with assistance.
Police immediately arrested Mr. Iyekar on charges of assault and battery and attempted kidnapping.
When authorities transported the victim back to the marina, she was rushed to the hospital through an ambulance for treatment for swollen lips, bruised facial area that extended to her back and right ear, and abrasion to her right shoulder and foot.
