Galileo Torwal’s heroic act when he saved a Japanese couple and in return sacrificed his own life was honored yesterday by the 6th Saipan and Northern Marianas Municipal Council.

Council Chair Gregorio V. Deleon Guerrero and Vice Chair David A. Indalecio presented a commemorative resolution to Mr. Torwal’s family led by his father Marino Mariur Torwal.

The resolution is in honor of Mr. Torwal’s sacrifice when he unselfishly put his life in danger to save the lives of visiting Japanese couple, Kohei and Takako Mase.

The couple who were on a parasailing trip last Jan. 21 figured in a near-death accident. Mr. Torwal who is a boat attendant at BSEA, Inc., immediately jumped into the water to rescue the two.

When the Japanese couple were brought safely to the boat, Mr. Torwal disappeared. After minutes of searching, Mr. Torwal’s body was recovered. He was brought to the Commonwealth Health Center but did not reach the hospital alive.

Because of his exemplary and heroic deeds, the Council expressed its heartfelt sympathy to Mr. Torwal’s family and recognized him being a natural hero who put other’s safety above his.
