Important things about betel nut

Public Health Medical Director Dr. Farhana Habib wishes to make the following clarifications about betel nut quid:

• Betel nut quid (betel nut, leaf and lime) with tobacco is classified as Group 1 Carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer.

• Group 1 classification stands for the agent or the mixture that is carcinogenic to humans. Betel quid without tobacco is classified as Group 3.

• Betel nut quid means the combined use of betel nut, betel leaf and lime. Betel nut is associated with leukoplakia and oral sub mucous fibrosis.
