Ichihara is Borja’s lieutenant governor • Democratic Party says educator is exceptionally qualified
After months of searching for a running mate in the November elections, Democratic Party gubernatorial candidate Jesse C. Borja yesterday announced that educator Brigida DLG Ichihara has been chosen by the party’s credentials committee to run for lt. governor.
Mr. Borja said the long and impressive record of Ms. Ichihara as an educator will prove her capability to handle the job. “My running mate is exceptionally qualified to be the candidate for lieutenant governor.”
She has the experience and education, her dedication and commitment are beyond question and she has the required desire to help our children, our people and our commonwealth, he said.
Immediately dismissing reports that he is backing out from the race, Mr. Borja said he is prepared to accept the challenges that lay ahead in the gubernatorial race.
With the split in the Republican Party brought about by the reported formation of a Covenant Party composed mostly of Republicans, the Democratic Party has the edge in the coming elections, Mr. Borja said.
Ms. Ichihara pledged to ensure that the people of the CNMI will receive the basic services needed once she gets elected in the post. Believing in team work, Ms. Ichihara said the CNMI people must unite and work together to effect change.
“We can no longer sit back and wait for other people to make things happen. We have to make things happen. We have to continue looking for better ways to help our people. We need to stop blaming or pointing fingers at others. We have to fix the problems,” she said.
Parents should not discourage their children from becoming carpenters, mechanics or farmers and help them to become the best in whatever profession they choose.
On criticisms that she may not be able to handle the job because of her gender, Ms. Ichihara said her running mate did not see it as an obstacle in the coming polls.
