No to shooting range
To the residents of Sadog Tasi Drive, other parts of Sadog Tasi, As Mahetog, and Puerto Rico: An outdoor facility composed of a shooting range, an archery range, paintball games, and bike trails is being proposed to be built at the end of Sadog Tasi Drive. The proposed site area of 48,000 square meters, lot number 22616 REM, is presently zoned rural. A zoning bill presently before Gov. Fitial for his signature proposes to change all of Sadog Tasi from rural to village-commercial. A public hearing for the proposed outdoor amusement area was postponed from March 14, 2012, to some date next month, according to a staff member of the Zoning Office in Dandan.
Almost all of the residents of Sadog Tasi Drive have signed a petition against the permitting of such an outdoor amusement area. If allowed, the proposed facility will expose young children and adult residents to possible stray bullets and stray arrows. Every morning and afternoon school children walk on Sadog Tasi Drive to and from the school bus stop. Every day children in the neighborhood play outdoors and adults walk outdoors for good health and exercise. Loud gunshot noises will disturb the peace and quiet of residents and farm animals in the area.
We urge residents living near the proposed outdoor amusement area to attend the public hearing next month at the Zoning Office in Dandan and express their concerns. A shooting range and an archery range do not belong in a quiet, residential area. For the new public hearing date, expect an announcement in the newspaper, or call the Zoning Office at 234-9661.
We also urge Governor Fitial not to sign the bill presently before him, which would rezone major areas on Saipan from rural to commercial. Saipan needs economic development, but not development that disturbs the health, safety, peace, and quiet of residents and tourists alike.
