New postal rates take effect on Sun.
Letter senders are faced with higher stamp price beginning Sunday when the United States Postal Service starts the implementation of the adjusted rates for both domestic and international mails.
In a media statement, the Postal Service announced the price of first class mail will increase a penny from 33 cents to 34 cents starting Jan. 7, 2001, which is about 15 cents a month for the average household.
“And while we’re talking cents, it makes good sense for customers to purchase 34-cent stamps before the new rate takes effect,” said USPS Honolulu District Manager Edward Broglio.
Mr. Broglio said one-cent stamps are also available at the counter and at the vending machines in packets of 50 stamps. New rate 34-cent stamps are now on sale in three designs: Statue of Liberty; Flowers stamps (both in books of 20 and coils of 100); and the Farm Flag stamp in a pane of 20 self-adhesives.
Vending machines also stock the new 34-cent stamps, said Mr. Broglio, adding that customers who prefer the convenience of letting their fingers do the shopping can order the 34-cent and the one-cent Kestrel stamps on the Internet at www.usps.com.
New postage rates for single-piece letter are: 34 cents for an ounce; 55 cents for two ounces; 76 cents for three ounces; 97 cents for four ounces; $1.18 for 5 ounces; $1.39 for 6 ounces; $1.60 for 7 ounces; $1.81 for 8 ounces; $2.02 for 9 ounces; $2.44 for 11 ounces; $2.65 for 12 ounces; $2.86 for 13 ounces.
For priority mails, the rates are: $3.50 for a pound and below; $3.95 for 1lb-2lbs; $5.15 for over 2lbs-3lbs; $6.35 for over 3lbs-4lbs; $7.55 for over 4lbs-5lbs.
Express mail rates are $12.25 for up to 0.5 pound; $16 for over 0.5 pound up to 2lbs and flat rate; $18.85 for over 2lbs up to 3lbs; $21.70 for over 3lbs up to 4lbs; $24.50 for over 4lbs up to 5lbs.
International Airmail: Canada and Mexico, 60 cents; 80 cents for all the other countries including Korea, Japan, China and the Philippines. International Postcards: 50 cents for Canada and Mexico and 70 cents for all other countries.
Money order rates are 75 cents for domestic, 25 cents for APO/FPO, and $3.25 for international. Aerogramme rate for all countries is 70 cents and certified mails would cost $1.90.
