For an entire day, professionals from different fields of expertise took turns to play the role of classroom teachers to 7th and 8th grade students yesterday in what appeared to be Hopwood Junior High School’s most successful Parent/Community Takeover Day.

More than 70 parents and community members rallied behind HJHS’ plight to establish closer links between Saipan’s lone junior high school and the community as they took time out from their busy schedules to speak before groups of junior high schoolers.

Various representatives from public and private agencies took time to share their expertise, period after period, relating their experiences and wisdom to Saipan’s future professionals.

Officials from the Dept. of Public Safety, Commonwealth Utilities Corp., Division of Youth Services, Board of Education, U.S. Coast Guard, Dept. of Lands and Natural Resources, Commonwealth Health Center, Northern Marianas, among others, were present to facilitate classroom discussions.

Takeover Day committee chair Hilda Joyner noted the positive turnout of guests who went out of their way to prepare brief presentations for the benefit of the students.

“This has been a very successful event. All the guests came and almost all classes have guest speakers,” said Ms. Joyner.

The main purpose of yesterday’s event was to address negative perceptions about Hopwood and reassure the surrounding community that the school administration is doing all it can to uplift the quality of education at Saipan’s only junior high school, according to committee members Cherlynn Cabrera and Jerry Jordan.

“That’s why we’re pushing for more involvement from our stakeholders,” added Mr. Jordan. (MM)
