Villagomez notes increase in ‘ice’ use
Public Health Secretary Joseph Kevin Villagomez yesterday expressed concern on what he described as an alarming increase in the number of people using methamphetamine hydrochloride or “ice” and cocaine on the island.
Mr. Villagomez said the rise on the use of prohibited drugs has also resulted in the increase in domestic violence cases. He said the problem of drug addiction has covered a cross section of society including those who cannot even afford to support such habit.
“We are asking the community to pay attention to their loved ones and watch out for any change in behavior. We should watch out for other types of addiction since these usually result in the break up of family and relationships,” Mr. Villagomez said.
In an effort to help curb the worsening drug problem on the island, the Community Guidance Center has continuously carry out different prevention programs.
DPH is seriously looking into the possibility of having a tie-up with an off-island medical facility to send patients for treatment.
“Negotiations are ongoing to make this possible. We see this as a solution since they need to be placed in a safe environment where they can get treatment and be rehabilitated,” Mr. Villagomez said.
The Community Guidance Center has intensified its information campaign against drugs and alcohol addiction amid the growing incidents of domestic violence, theft and burglary.
Mr. Villagomez said family members and civic groups in the community must also share their efforts in fighting drug addiction which has victimized a growing number of young people.
The worsening drug problem on the island has alarmed public health officials as it has contributed to the depletion of limited financial resources. A huge chunk of money on medical referral has been spent on the treatment of patients who are victims of drugs and alcohol addiction. (Lindablue F. Romero)
