Police eyes link of Filipino suspects to string of robberies

Police are investigating the possible link of four suspects in the robbery of a Japanese residence to other incidents of robberies, burglaries and theft on the island.
Suspects Victormarie R. Santa Monica and Allan E. Rodeo pled not guilty to the Oct. 9, 2000 robbery at the residence of Juno and Iwao Sakai. Two other accused, Glenn L. Quiobe and Joselito A. Ambat, have allegedly fled to the Philippines but initial information showed that one went to Guam and the other went to Seoul, Korea.
The Department of Public Safety is looking at the possibility of requesting assistance from the Philippine National Police to locate the two other suspects.
According to police investigation, the alleged robbers ransacked the Sakai residence and ran away with $11,000 in cash and $20,000 worth of jewelry. They also used the Toyota 4Runner owned by the Japanese couple as a getaway vehicle.
Police said Ms. Sakai was awakened at around 1:00 p.m. by noises from masked robbers inside the house. Two of the robbers were wearing Halloween mask. The recovery of a gold coin and a silver coin led to the arrest of the two suspects.
Police investigator Dwaine Stephen said Mr. Santa Monica admitted his participation in the robbery when confronted and even surrendered the watch they took at the Sakai residence.
Mr. Santa Monica remains in police custody police for failing to post a cash bail of $31,500. On the other hand, Mr. Rodeo was released on third party custody after posting a property bond.
The suspects are facing seven counts each of criminal charges which include robbery, theft, burglary, assault with a dangerous weapon, and assault and battery. (LFR)
