After two years of preparation, the new firing range of the Department of Public Safety formally opened yesterday at San Juan in Marpi finally replacing its rundown facility.

The one-hectare training facility was partly funded by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, which purchased the equipment. FBI granted a $46,000 funding for the project.

Aside from the FBI and the DPS, the firing range will also be made available to other government agencies. “We helped in establishing this facility because our own agents also need a professional shooting range to conduct our training,” said Frank T. Ishizaki, supervisory special agent.

Instructors can be brought to the island to provide SWAT training and police operations.

DPS Commissioner Charles W. Ingram said different government agencies pitched in money to complete the project including the Division of Customs, Commonwealth Ports Authority, Division of Fish and Wildlife, Division of Corrections and the Attorney General’s Investigative Unit.

The Office of the Mayor provided equipment and labor to clear the firing range area while the Commonwealth Utilities Corp. provided the telephone lines.
